Biographical Photographs -- Print File
Abstract
This collection contains photographs of individuals and groups of people, arranged by the subject's last name. The collection includes people associated with the University of Maryland; prominent citizens and politicians on the local, state, and national levels; and photographs from other collections in the Archives and Manuscripts department. Though many of the photographs are formal portraits, there are also candid action shots and snapshots. Additional photographs of University of Maryland faculty, administrators, and students may be found in University of Maryland Photographs -- Print File.

There are no restricted files in this collection.
This collection is PROCESSED.
Historical Note
The Biographical Photographs -- Print File consists mainly of portraits of individuals and groups of people from collections in the University of Maryland Libraries Special Collections. Many are identified as professors, students, staff, or alumni of the University of Maryland. Many former presidents of the University are pictured, with many photographs of Wilson H. Elkins and Harry Clifton Byrd. There are also photographs of the influential former Dean of Women, Adele H. Stamp. The collection also includes photographs of local, state, and national politicians and prominent citizens, including former governors Edwin A. Warfield, Marvin Mandel, and Theodore R. McKeldin and former United States presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Richard M. Nixon. There are also photos of politicians and other dignitaries from West Germany taken during the post-World War II Allied occupation of Germany. Some of the subjects of the photographs are identified only by their first and last names--in some cases only the last--and no other information is available.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Biographical Photographs -- Print File covers the years 1860 to 1979 (and undated), with the bulk of photographs dating from the 1900s to the 1960s. Most of the photographs are black and white prints, but there are a few cyanotypes and color prints. Creators include the Kenneth Grace, Harry Clifton "Curley" Byrd, Wilson H. Elkins, Millard E. Tydings, the United States Armed Forces, and others. The creators for many of the photographs are unknown.
Custodial History and Acquisition Information
The Biographical Photographs -- Print File were assembled between 1972 and 1983 from a variety of accessions and donors, including the Harry Clifton Byrd papers, the Wilson H. Elkins papers, and the William L. Amoss papers, as well as many other collections accessioned before 1983. Because there is little documentation identifying the collections from which the Biographical Photographs were taken, the provenance and custodial history for many of the photographs is unknown.
Processing Information
Created 1972-1983. Processed by Caitlin Wells, July 2011.
Between 1972 and 1983, staff members of the University of Maryland Libraries removed photographs from various existing campus collections and consolidated them into one collection, designated the Print Files. The Print Files were arranged in three groupings based on subject matter--the University of Maryland, Biographical, and Subjects. The Biographical portion contains photographs from many collections, with subjects both identified and unidentified. Folders within the Biographical section were arranged in alphabetical order by the last name of the subject. The photographs were mounted on white boards, and each assigned an accession number. Information from the backs of photographs was recorded on the backs of the boards, but in some cases is incomplete or illegible.
During processing in 2011, folders in the Biographical portion of the Print Files were reviewed and condensed into fewer folders. Photographs were moved to more appropriate folders, if necessary. As a result, some of the folder titles originally recorded on the backs of the photographs do not correspond with the titles of the folders to which they were moved. The photographs were rehoused in acid-free archival boxes. Photographs previously separated from the following collections were removed from the print files and returned to those collections: the American Association of University Women, College Park Branch archives; the William L. Amoss papers; the Bock Ark papers; the Harry Clifton Byrd papers; the archives of the Cigar Makers International Union; the John Timberlake Gibson papers; the Kenneth Grace papers; the Lawrence Joseph Hogan papers; the William S. James papers; the Hervey G. Machen papers; the Maryland State Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry archives; the Milton A. Reckord papers; the Mary S. Shorb papers; the Carlton Ralph Sickles papers; the Lathrop E. Smith papers; the Adele Stamp papers; the Tobacco Workers International Union archives; the Millard E. Tydings papers; the Hubert Kelly Waldron papers; the Warfield Family papers; and the Weems-Reynolds Family papers. In July 2011, one photograph documenting the Madrigal Singers was transferred to Special Collections in Performing Arts in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library.
