Abstract:

James E. Moore (1929-) is professor emeritus at Northwestern University in music education and was former Director of Admissions for the School of Music. He is most well known for his dissertation research (Ph.D. University of Michigan, 1968) on the National Band Contests from 1926 to 1931, organized by the National Association of Music, which is a significant contribution to music education research. Moore's research material encompass his collection, including a hardcopy and microfilm version of his dissertation, correspondence, notecards, programs, brochures, periodical clippings, contest yearbooks, and issues of The School Musician from 1929 to 1933.

Historical Note

James E. Moore received his Master's in 1955 and Ph.D. in 1968 from the University of Michigan. He received his appointment as associate professor at Northwestern University upon receiving his doctorate. Before the Northwestern post, he taught at several colleges, such as the University of Michigan (1962-63), Cochise College (1964-67), and Idaho State University (1967-68) and prior to that, at a number of public schools from 1950 to 1964. At Northwestern, Moore taught clarinet lessons and music education classes in addition to supervising School of Music Administration and Admissions. Beginning with his dissertation and continuing throughout his career, Moore's research focuses on the National High School Band Contests, 1926 to 1931. This research is a significant contribution to the early history of music education in the United States. Moore retired from the Northwestern University in 1994, achieving emeritus status, and currently resides in Tucson, Arizona.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The James E. Moore Papers covers the period from 1924 to 1972; the bulk of the materials date from 1926 to 1933 and 1964 to 1968. The collection consists of professional papers including both published and unpublished writings, correspondence, notecards, programs, clippings, and articles related to Moore's work on his 1968 dissertation on the National Band Contests from 1926 to 1931.

This series contains a 1953 sound recording labeled, "Band," given to James E. Moore by E.R. Prescott, a conductor's score of "The Knight Errant Overture," by Chas. Oneill (undated), and a band method book, Foundation to Band Playing, an Elementary Method, for B-flat cornet and trumpet, by Fred O. Griffin, director of Hartley, Iowa, High School Band, who won the 1926 Iowa State National Band Contest.
