Cleon E. Dalby Papers
Abstract
Cleon E. Dalby organized and conducted high school bands in the Western Slope region of Colorado from 1914 to 1965. After leaving the public schools system, he continued to direct and teach privately for 28 years. Dalby was member of the American Bandmasters Association and was honored as a "Trendsetter in Music Education" by the Colorado Music Educators Association in 1989.

Historical Note
Cleon E. Dalby was born in Levan, Utah, in 1894, and died in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1978. He attended Brigham Young University, Ricks University, and the University of California, Berkeley. He also studied with Hy Lammers of the Sousa Band, and with William H. Bickett of San Francisco. Dalby was the cornet soloist for the Salt Lake City Municipal Band from 1925 to 1926. He organized and conducted the high school bands of Colorados Western Slope region, as well as serving on the planning committees for band contests in that area. In 1931, three of his bands took first place in their class at the band contest in Grand Junction, Colorado. After leaving public school teaching, he taught privately for twenty-eight years. Dalby was member of the American Bandmasters Association and was honored as a Trendsetter in Music Education by the Colorado Music Educators Association in 1989.

The Cleon E. Dalby Papers covers the period of 1911 to 1993. The bulk of the collection spans from 1915 to 1940. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, programs, photographs, publications, and biographical sketches.

Subseries 4.3: Dalby's Students and Bands He Organized, 1923-1964 (48 items)
There are a total of 48 photos, spanning over forty years of many different bands. These photos are from competitions, concerts and schools. The bands included are Dalby's own Military School Band and Concert Band, Palisade H.S., Fruitvale H.S., Western State College, Clifton H.S., Optimist Club Boy's Band, Junior Optimist Club Boy's Band (both eventually became coed), State Industrial School Band at Ogden, Advanced Band of Lammers' Band School, and the 145th Field Artillery Band.
