Robert Klotman Papers
Abstract
Robert Klotman, born in 1918, was an active musician, educator, and leader in the field of music education. He served as President of the Music Educators National Conference from 1976 to 1978 and President of the North Central Division of MENC from 1972 to 1974. This collection consists of Klotmans professional papers including correspondence, speeches, articles, publications, and programs related to large initiatives undertaken by MENC such as the Teachers Education Commission, Contemporary Music Project, and work with the United States government to secure funds for music education.

Historical Note
Robert Klotman, violinist, conductor, and music educator, was born in 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio. Klotman received his BS in Education from Ohio Northern University, his MA in Music from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and his Doctor of Education from Teachers College at Columbia University. He began his career as an educator in 1940 as an instrumental and vocal teacher in Dola, Ohio. In addition to teaching, Klotman also performed as a member of the Cleveland Philharmonic Civic Orchestra from 1948-1956. Klotman later became the Director of Music Education for Detroit Public Schools, and held this position from 1963 until becoming Professor of Music and Chairman of the Music Education department at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1969. During his career, Klotman served as guest conductor with many honor bands and symphony orchestras as well as guest lecturer and visiting professor at universities around the world including the University of Michigan, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in the Peoples Republic of China, and the Zagreb Conservatory of Music in Yugoslavia. In addition to serving as the President of the American String Teachers Association from 1962 to 1964, Klotman served as President of the North Central Division of the Music Educators National Conference from 1972-1974 and President of the Music Educators National Conference from 1976 to 1978. In 2004 Klotman was inducted into MENCs Music Educators Hall of Fame. He is now Professor Emeritus of Music Education at Indiana University.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Robert Klotman Papers cover the period from 1947 to 1988; the bulk of the materials date from 1973 to 1978. The collection consists of professional papers including correspondence, speeches, articles, publications, and programs related to Klotmans work as president of MENC. The collection includes materials related to the governance of MENC, the Teachers Education Commission, Contemporary Music Project, government relations, and Klotmans many speeches and articles on music education.

This subseries contains correspondence between Klotman and other MENC national members and other arts organizations. Materials include correspondence, audio cassettes, and pamphlets. Some of these materials deal with governmental groups and therefore contain governmental information such as congressional hearings and correspondence with state senators. Materials are organized by organization and arranged alphabetically.
