Historical Note
The Women's Studies Pamphlet Collection was established by Susan Cardinale, Associate Librarian for Special Collections, in the early 1970s. When Cardinale transferred to a reference position in McKeldin Library, the pamphlet collection moved with her from Special Collections.
In 1985 Cardinale resigned from the University of Maryland Libraries, and Betty Day, reference librarian and bibliographer in McKeldin Library, assumed responsibility for development of the pamphlet collection. While Cardinale had gathered most of the materials at conferences and at similar meetings, Day primarily added gift items to the collection; substantial donations came from the Project for Educational Equity (PEER) and from the files of Dr. Jean Grambs, professor of Education at the University of Maryland.
In 1991, the collection was transferred back to the Archives and Manuscripts department of the Libraries.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The materials in this collection date from 1846 to 1987; the bulk of the items cover the years 1972 through 1982. This pamphlet collection consists of items that would be of use to resarchers interested in women's issues. Much of the documents collected are "working," unpublished papers; also included are reports, brochures and newsletters. The collection is arranged into 71 subject headings covering a wide range of issues and topics, such as abortion, equal rights, homeworkers, Maryland women, returning students, Title IX, and women around the world, and provide an interesting perspective into the women's movement, particularly during the 1970s.
Custodial History and Acquisition Information
The Women's Studies Pamphlet Collection was developed for the University of Maryland, College Park, by Susan Cardinale in the early 1970s. Additional gift items were added to the collection by Betty Day.
Processing Information
Processed by Sharon Groves, April 1991. Revised by Maureen Cech, May 2010. Revised by Allison Heinbaugh, April 2011.
In preparing this collection for patron use, the list of subject headings was updated and cross references were established. The collection was place in acid-free folders and boxes. Paper clips, staples and other metal fasteners were removed and replaced with plastic clips; items too thick to be clipped have been filed between sheets of acid-free bond paper. Lastly, the guide was written.
