Abstract:

Jerome Lowenthal (1932--) is a pianist and music educator. He has performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and many major orchestras in the United States and is a faculty member at the Juilliard School in New York. Lowenthal was also a lecturer at the Jerusalem Academy in Israel. The collection consists of 4.00 linear feet of articles, programs, recordings, clippings, and publicity flyers related to Lowenthals career, the ensembles he was involved in, and the people he played with, including violinist Christiaan Boor and cellist Jeffery Solow.

Historical Note

Summary: Jerome Lowenthal was born in Philadelphia, PA (1932). He made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 13 and studied with both William Kapell and Alfred Cortot. Lowenthal was a concert-lecturer at the Jerusalem Academy in Israel and an annual performer with the Israel Philharmonic. He appeared with most major orchestras in the U.S. (1961--). For many years, he has been a faculty member at the Juilliard School in New York.

Full History: Jerome Lowenthal was born in Philadelphia, PA. in 1932. He made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 13. He went on to study with William Kapell, Edward Steuermann and Alfred Cortot. He studied and performed in Europe before moving to Jerusalem, where he was a concert-lecturer at the Jerusalem Academy and an annual performer with the Israel Philharmonic. In 1961, Lowenthal returned to the U.S. and appeared with virtually every major orchestra in the country. For many years, he has been a faculty member at the Juilliard School in New York. Recordings by Jerome Lowenthal have been issued on the Vanguard, RCA and Arabesque labels.

The Jerome Lowenthal Collection covers the period from 1954 to 1988; the bulk of the materials date from 1963 to 1983, and the collection is 4.00 linear feet. The collection consists of professional papers, including articles, programs, recordings, clippings, and publicity flyers related to Lowenthals work as a performer, including his work recording with the Vanguard, RCA, and Arabesque labels and performing with various orchestras such as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

This series is divided into programs and taped recordings of Lowenthals performances.

Subseries 1.1: Programs, 1954-1980, and Undated

This subseries contains programs related to Lowenthals performances, including his performances at the Marlboro and Los Angeles Music Festivals, with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and in places such as Argentina. This subseries is arranged chronologically by performance date.
