Abstract:

A pianist and music educator, Jane Carlson (?-1998) was best known for her performances of Hindemiths "Ludus Tonalis". She also performed in the U.S. and around the world, including in places such as Korea, England, Iceland, Norway, Holland, and Belgium. In addition, Carlson taught at the Juilliard School, The University of California-Berkeley, and Dartmouth College. The collection consists of 18.75 linear feet of both personal and professional papers, including programs, reviews, scrapbooks, press clippings, correspondence, contracts, publicity flyers, biographical outlines, notes, repertoire lists, awards, photographs, recordings, scores, bulletins, itineraries, receipts, and books related to Carlsons career, the organizations she was involved in, and her relationships with her close colleagues, including her piano teachers, Carl Friedberg and Myra Hess; and composer Paul Hindemith.

Historical Note

Summary: Jane Carlson was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She studied at the Juilliard School in New York with Carl Friedberg. Carlson was a faculty member of the Preparatory Division of the Juilliard School and also taught at both The University of California-Berkeley and at Dartmouth College. As a pianist, she toured throughout the world, performing both contemporary and standard works. She was particularly identified with the music of Paul Hindemith, performing his "Ludus Tonalis" many times. Carlson died in 1998.

Full History: Jane Carlson was born in Hartford, Connecticut where she discovered a love for the piano at an early age. She took up formal piano lessons, which continued through her high school years and, upon graduation, was granted a regional scholarship to the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Virginia. Following her studies there, she moved on to the Juilliard School in New York. Carlson studied with both Carl Friedberg and Dame Myra Hess. She then joined the faculty of the Preparatory Division of the Juilliard School. At various times, Carlson also taught at The University of California-Berkeley and at Dartmouth College. As a pianist, she toured throughout the world, from Iceland to Norway to Korea to England, performing both contemporary and standard works. She was particularly identified with the music of Paul Hindemith, performing his "Ludus Tonalis" on many occasions, and earning the esteem of the composer for her interpretation. Carlson died in 1998.

The Jane Carlson Collection covers the period from Circa 1919 to 1998; the bulk of the materials date from 1937 to 1985. The collection consists of 18.75 linear feet of both personal and professional papers, including programs, reviews, scrapbooks, press clippings, correspondence, contracts, publicity flyers, biographical outlines, notes, repertoire lists, awards, photographs, recordings, scores, bulletins, itineraries, receipts, and books related to Carlsons work as a performer and music educator, including her performances at Shenandoah Conservatory , her performances, lectures, and private instruction at both the Juilliard School and at Dartmouth College, and her involvement with Foundation Hindemith.
