Kenneth J. Garry has worked in broadcasting at various locations including WUSI/WSUI at the Southern Illinois University and at WCTE (Cookeville, Tennessee) where he is currently General Manager. The collection documents the growth and early history of various public radio organizations.

Historical Note
Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1942, Kenneth John Garry has had a long and distinguished career in public broadcasting. Garry's education includes a bachelor's degree in economics and history in 1964 from DePauw University (Greencastle, Indiana), a master's degree in broadcasting in 1966 from Indiana State University (Terre Haute, Indiana), and a Ph.D. in instructional technology and higher education from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale, Illinois) which he received in 1982.
Before accepting his current appointment in 1996 as President and General Manager of WCTE-TV in Cookeville, Tennessee, Garry was an administrator at Southern Illinois University. From 1971 to 1996, Garry taught numerous radio and television courses and filled a variety of positions, including Director of Graduate Studies in Telecommunications, General Manager of WUSI TV/FM, Station Manager of WSIU-FM, and Director of Development and Ascertainment for WSIU/WUSI FM/TV. While at Southern Illinois University, Garry was instrumental in drafting over two dozen successful grant applications, which garnered over two million dollars for the university's broadcasting service.
Before his work at Southern Illinois University, Garry served as a radio station manager at Florida State University (Tallahassee, Florida) and the University of Nebraska (Omaha, Nebraska). During his early career, Garry worked as a television producer/director for the U.S. Army Artillery and Missile School at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, a commercial broadcast account executive in Omaha, Nebraska, and as a institutional/restaurant foodstuffs salesman for Kraft Foods Company in Chicago, Illinois.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Kenneth J. Garry Papers documents the growth and early history of various public radio organizations. The collection offers insights to the mission, organization, and programming policies of these organizations, as well as their budgetary and financial concerns. More specifically, the collection contains minutes from board meetings, budgets, correspondence, press clippings, materials concerning the Carnegie II hearings, and documents relating to satellite and broadcast technology. The collection spans years from 1970 to 1981 and includes some undated material.
Garry collected these papers, during a four-week archive search at National Public Radio (NPR), while researching his doctoral dissertation at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. The dissertation, entitled "The History of National Public Radio: 1974-1977," examines National Public Radio's development and growth, with particular attention to corporate structure, programming, and budgetary allocations.
