Abstract:

Michael Mark (b. 1936) is an American music educator and author. He received his degrees in music from Catholic University (BM 1958 and DMA 1969), George Washington University (MA 1960), and the University of Michigan (MM 1962). During his career, Mark was employed by public school systems and universities in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and New York. As an author he has published numerous books and articles on music education, frequently on the history of that topic. This collection consists of educational materials, correspondence, writings, newspaper clippings, photographs, books, recordings, and scores related to his career as an educator and author.

Historical Note

Michael Mark (b. 1936) is an American music educator, scholar, and author. He received degrees in music from Catholic University (BM 1958 and DMA 1969), George Washington University (MA 1960), and the University of Michigan (MM 1962). As a teacher, he worked in the public schools of Prince George's County, Maryland from 1958-1963. He held the rank of Associate Professor at Morgan State University from 1966-70, served as Head of Music Education at Catholic University from 1973-81, and as Supervisor of Music for the Auburn and Elmira, New York public schools from 1970-73. After leaving these positions in 1981 he started a career at Towson State University. At Towson, he served as Dean of the Graduate School from 1981 until 1995, and as Professor of Music from 1981 until 1998.

As an author and editor, Mark has contributed much to the field of music education. He is the author of several music education texts, including Contemporary Music Education, A History of American Music Education (with Charles Gary), and Source Readings in Music Education. Mark also edited and published articles in various music education journals including Music Educators Journal, The Instrumentalist, and the Council for Research in Music Education.

In addition to being a Fulbright Scholar, Mark was the recipient of the 1998 distinguished alumni award from Catholic University. Mark was inducted into the Music Educators National Conference Hall of Fame in 2008.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Michael Mark Papers covers the period from 1894 to 2008; the bulk of the materials date from 1960 to 2008. The collection consists of personal and professional papers related to Mark's work as an educator, including his work at Towson State University, Catholic University, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Council of Graduate Schools, and with various music education organizations such as the Music Educators National Conference. Materials include published and unpublished writings, correspondence, programs, newspaper clippings, articles, recordings, books, and scores.
