Edward L. Longley Collection on Jim Henson
Abstract
Dr. Edward L. Longley is an American watercolor painter from Baltimore, Maryland. He has studied at Columbia University Teachers College, American University, Penn State College, and the University of Maryland, where he was an Associate Professor of Art Education from 1952 to 1984. His work has been displayed in both prominent and local spaces since 1964.

Historical Note
Edward L. Longley is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He has studied at The University of Maryland, Columbia University Teachers College, American University, and Pennsylvania State University. In 1984, after 32 years, he retired as an Associate Professor in Art Education from The University of Maryland.
Since 1964, his paintings have been almost exclusively in watercolor, but he has exhibited oil, acrylic, pen, and ink works. Much of his work has been exhibited in galleries in the Maryland and Washington D.C area. In 1989, his work was accepted at the American Watercolor Society of New York and in 1991, he received a patron purchase award from the Watercolor U.S.A. show at the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri.
Dr. Longley has won a number of awards from the Baltimore Watercolor Society and the Olney Art Association, among others. His individual works have also won awards and been reproduced.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Edward L. Longley Collection on Jim Henson covers the period from 1957 to 2003; the bulk of the materials date from 1979 to 1997. The collection includes a brief biography and lesson plan on puppetry, but the majority consists of newspaper clippings and various periodicals featuring narratives on Jim Hensons career. Also included are a few photographs of Jim Henson, his artwork, and two paper-mache heads, one male and one female.
