Abstract:

Thomas DeLio, born Jan 7, 1951, is an American experimental music composer, author, and educator. His research includes analyses and discourse on the likes of John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Iannis Xenakis. He is currently a professor in music theory and composition at the University of Maryland, College Park. This collection contains correspondence, compositions and sketches by Delio and his students, presentation papers from conferences and classes, DeLio's dissertation, theses and dissertations from students, publications and reviews, photographs, programs, and newspaper clippings.

Historical Note

Thomas DeLio is an American experimental music composer, author, and educator. His research includes analyses and discourse on the likes of John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Iannis Xenakis. He has written for soloists, chamber music, and orchestra, and also has created many works of computer music. His compositions are documented on numerous labels in America, France, Germany, and Italy. His essays have been published in The Journal of Music Theory, Perspectives of New Music, Interface, Artforum, Contemporary Music Review (London), Revue d'Esthetique (Paris), and MusikText (Cologne). He received a Bachelor of Music Degree from the New England Conservatory where he studied under Robert Cogan, and a PhD from Brown University where he combined study in music, visual arts, and mathematics. He is currently a professor in music theory and composition at the University of Maryland, College Park and was formerly professor of theory and composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston and Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Thomas DeLio Collection covers the period from 1970-2014; the bulk of the materials date from 1970-2000. The collection consists of both personal and professional papers including correspondence, compositions and sketches by DeLio and his students, presentation papers from conferences and classes, DeLio's dissertation, theses and dissertations from students, publications and reviews, photos, and newspaper clippings related to DeLio's work as a professor, composer, and scholar.
