Abstract:

Dr. Jackson R. Bryer is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Marylands Department of English, who has also worked with the Department of Theatre as an affiliate faculty member and literary advisor. The Jackson R. Bryer Interviews Collection covers the period from 1990 to 2004; the bulk of the materials date from 1991 to 1993, and 2002 to 2004. The collection consists of recorded interviews of notable playwrights, music theatre composers and lyricists, and performers.

Historical Note

Dr. Jackson R. Bryer is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Maryland's Department of English. A recipient of the university's Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award in 2004, Bryer has also worked with the Department of Theatre as an affiliate faculty member and literary advisor. He is the author, editor, co-author, or co-editor of thirty-one books, has contributed to thirty-seven books, and published thirty journal articles. Bryer's professional service includes leadership positions with many literary and theatre organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors for the Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archive, on the Board of Directors for the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, and as president of the Eugene O'Neill Society. A specialist in American and modern literature, Bryer earned his Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin in 1965.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Jackson R. Bryer Interviews Collection covers the period from 1990 to 2004; the bulk of the materials date from 1991 to 1993, and 2002 to 2004. The collection consists of recorded interviews of notable playwrights, music theatre composers and lyricists, and performers. Many of these interviews are included in Dr. Bryers publications, The Playwrights Art (1995), The Actors Art (2001), and The Art of the American Musical (2005).

Custodial History and Acquisition Information

Gift of Jackson Bryer, Bonnie Nelson Schwartz, and Richard A. Davison, April 2008. A second gift was placed at the University of Maryland on 1 September 2015 by Jackson Bryer. It is a joint gift of Bryer, John Fuegi, and Bonnie Nelson Schwartz.

Series 1: Audiocassette Interviews, 1990-2004 (21 items)

This series contains audio-recorded interviews with notable figures involved from the theatre profession. Except where noted, Dr. Bryer conducted or contributed to all of the interviews. Materials are arranged chronologically. Descriptions of content are transcribed verbatim from the items. These items have been digitized and are available for use.

This subseries includes the video-recorded interviews that are collected in Bryers 1994 work, The Playwrights Art: Conversations with Contemporary American Dramatists. The majority of the interviews are part of the Smithsonian Institutions Conversations with Leading American Playwrights series in Washington, D. C., in 1991. Materials are arranged chronologically, though some tapes contain multiple interviews recorded on different dates.

Some of the interviews are part of the Smithsonian Institutions The Smithsonian Celebrates Broadways 100th Birthday! series that took place in Washington, D. C., in the fall of 1993.

The majority of the interviews are part of the Smithsonian Institutions Presenting The American Musical Theatre! series that took place in Washington, D. C., in the fall of 1992.
