News and Highlights: From the Vault (March 2006)
Happy Birthday, University of Maryland!
On March 6, 1856, the Maryland General Assembly chartered a new institution of higher education, the Maryland Agricultural College. Three years later, on October 5, 1859, the doors were thrown open to the first students—eager to learn about agriculture and engineering. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the University of Maryland! This stock certificate, dated 1858, was signed by Charles Benedict Calvert, the founder of the University of Maryland. It is part of a our Maryland Manuscripts Collection.
