Maryland Agricultural
Experiment Station records, 1852-1983. 34.50 linear

Location: University of Maryland
The MAES was established in College Park in 1888 to use the resources of science to improve the practice and profitability of agriculture; the station was also to conduct investigations into the agricultural problems that most concerned farmers and to publish and disseminate the results of that research. The collection--which includes correspondence, project reports, inventories, contracts and agreements, financial documents, legal records, academic department files, and pamphlets--covers such topics as animal science, animal and dairy husbandry, and veterinary science.

William L. Amoss papers, 1884-1936. 14.00 linear feet.
Location: University of Maryland
A native Marylander, Amoss served as director of the Department of Farmers Institutes of the Maryland Agricultural College from 1896 until 1910. He also organized the Maryland agricultural exhibit for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Of special interest in the collection is a record book, dated 1891, which contains information about various individual horses on Amoss's farm.

John Timberlake Gibson papers, 1955-1974. 2.00 linear feet.
Location: State of Maryland and Historical Collections
Gibson, who served on President Truman's Executive Office Staff, was also a writer who contributed to such magazines as Holiday, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian, Town and Country, and Washingtonian. Gibson owned "Jackie Dare," the horse which won the 1964 Maryland Futurity at Laurel Race Course. His papers include bills of sale, birth certificates, and breeding information for Gibson's many horses, as well as related correspondence and financial records.

The Maryland Horse Breeders Association was founded in 1929 with the goals of promoting, protecting, and educating the Maryland horse industry. The association has sought to accomplish these objectives primarily through Maryland Horse, a publication which began as a newsletter in 1936 and has since grown into a popular full-length magazine. The MHBA archives cover such subjects as horse sales, shows, and racing; registration of Maryland-bred horses; Maryland fund bonus payments; and the syndication of stallions.

Maryland Veterinary Medical Association archives, 1886-1995. 4 linear feet.
Location: State of Maryland and Historical Collections
The Maryland Veterinary Medical Association was founded in 1885 for the purpose of advancing veterinary science in the state of Maryland. The association has been active in advocating both the establishment of standards within the veterinary profession and the enactment of relevant legislation at both the state and federal levels. The Marylandia and Rare Books Collection includes related publications such as Maryland Veterinarian and MVMA Newsletter.

Work Projects Administration in Maryland records, 1933-1943. 29.50 linear feet + 50 reels microfilm.

The Work Projects Administration was established by President Roosevelt in 1935 in order to finance work relief for persons on the state relief rolls. Under the WPA's Federal Project No. 1, the Maryland Federal Writers' Project produced draft articles and essays which dealt with various topics as they related to Maryland. Some of the topics covered in the WPA subject files are: Agriculture--Horses, Baltimore--Horses, and Sports and Recreation--Horse Racing.

The Maryland Manuscripts grouping consists of a wide variety of materials, such as letters, diaries, printed ephemera, and business ledgers, which have been described individually. Among these items are a number that relate to horse racing and breeding, including lists of retailers at horse shows and the constitution and bylaws of the Association of Maryland Horse Shows. These items can be located in the card catalog under the following headings: Horse--Retailers--Maryland, Horse Shows, and Horses.
Photographs
Among the departmental photographic holdings are images, dating from 1900 through 1971, which depict various horses and equestrian activities. The photographs show individual horses as well as race tracks and horse sales.
