This painting of the famous Civil War battle by John Elder (1833-95) depicts the charge of Matrone's Virginia brigade after the Confederate defense line had been broken by the Union mine. Several hours later, Lee's troops recaptured their line. The Crater is in Petersburg National Military Park, Virginia." Message reads: "Dear Mom and family, Guess you thought we were gone.
