Summary: | Belle Isle and Falls of James River, Richmond, Virginia, circa 1915-1917. Caption reads: "Beautiful and Historical Richmond, Va., Series. No. 29. Belle Isle and Falls of James River, Richmond, Va. A portion of the unique steel viaduct of the C. &. O. Ry, which extends down the bed of the river for a distance of nearly two miles is shown in this view. Also the dam of the Va. Ry. & P Co. extending across the river from bank to bank, and harnessing its turbulent water for the electrification of the city. In the middle distance is Belle Isle, where the Confederate Government maintained a large military prison; the inmates being housed in tents surrounded by a stockade. Across the river is Washington Ward of Richmond. This ward was formerly the City of Manchester but was united by Richmond by annexation in April 1910." Postcard number: 29, 45600. |
