During the battle of New Market, May 15, 1864, the post shown above was struck by a three-inch rifle shell fired by Snow's Battery of Federal army. Gen. Breckinridge, the Confederate commander, was sitting on his horse in the middle of the Valley Pike only five yards away, and was about to raise his field glass to observe the position of the enemy.
