Summary:Conference speech and reading by Katherine Anne Porter at Sala Ponce, Palacio de las Bellas Artes, Mexico City, Mexico, on June 6, 1960. The first of two tapes. After a brief introduction by a man, Porter makes brief remarks on her occasional writings as well as Homer, Penelope, Calypso, Helen and Athena of the Odyssey before launching into a reading of "A Defense of Circe." This portion of the reading includes the text from pages 133-37 in her Collected Essays with occasional interjections and explanations.
