Historical Note

In the early 1970s, Robert Hoe and Commander Don Stauffer of the United States Navy Band undertook a project to record marches not otherwise available commercially. In 1975, the Navy Band released the first fifteen LPs in the Heritage of the March series. Each record featured the music of one European and one American composer. The project expanded to include recordings of other service, university and school bands, as well as professional and amateur ensembles. In addition to the Heritage of the March series, Hoe oversaw an eighteen-LP, nine-volume set of Sousas works with the United States Marine Band. Much of the project was funded by donations and Hoes own estate, made as the owner of one of the largest millwork business in the country and his chain of bowling alleys in upper New York state.

Robert Hoe was an Associate Member of the American Bandmasters Association, as his Foundation is today.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The recordings in this collection were produced in several series. The first, collectively entitled The Heritage of the March contains recordings of specific composers and are mostly performed by service bands (numbered 1-90, missing volume 89), and additional recordings of marches by composers represented in the numbered series (lettered A-Z; AA-ZZ; and AAA-FFF, volume E is missing). The second series (Schoepper-Marines) contains volumes 4-21 of band transcription played by The United States Marine Band. The third series contains six recordings made by the Allentown Band. The fourth series consists of the two volumes of Art Lehmans The Art of Euphonium Playing. Series five contains a single LP of cornet solos; series six of three volume of Leftover Marches; series seven of a single LP of the United States Coast Guard; and series eight of three volumes of Miscellaneous Marches. The final series contains the nine LPs of the United States Marine Band playing The Heritage of John Philip Sousa.
