C.C Birchard and Co. was founded in 1901 by Clarence C. Birchard, a music teacher and manager of various summer schools for music songbook publishers. His company specialized in the publication of music books for schools and the works of American composers. His school series, The Laurel Song Book (1901), was highly successful and set new standards in music selection and graphics. He promoted American composers, including Ives, Still, Hanson, and Copland. He was one of the founders of the Music Supervisors National Conference (MSNC) and took advantage of the community singing movement, a byproduct of the public, patriotic stirrings of World War I, to publish several related collections, of which the Twice 55 Community Songs, compiled by the MSNC, was the most successful. Birchard also promoted the use of the saxophone and published several pioneering orchestra and band method books.
