Reverse caption reads: "Serpentine Wall - University of Virginia. The Serpentine Wall is a unique structure, planned by the founder of the University, Thomas Jefferson, himself. Between the Ranges and the Lawns, lie the gardens attached to the pavilions on the Lawns; these are separated at intervals by narrow streets, enclosed by zigzag brick walls, a single brick in thickness, - adding a prominent and picturesque feature to the place."
