Summary:Old Church, Pueblo Acoma, New Mexico, circa 1907-1914. Caption reads: "Acoma is the oldest inhabited Indian Settlement in the United States. It was 'old' when first visited by Coronado's expedition in 1540, sixty-seven years before Jamestown was founded and eighty years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. The rock up which the village is perched rises 357 feet above the surrounding plain, and formerly only a precipitous foot trail led to it. The church required forty years in the building. It is of enormous proportions, with walls forty feet high and ten feet thick, and covers more ground than any modern church in America. All of the material used was carried up with infinite toil and patience on the backs of faithful Indians, from the plains below." Postcard number: 79819.
