Richmond National Battlefield Park
Summary:Cannon, historical marker, and the James River, Richmond National Battlefield Park, Richmond, Virginia, circa 1961-1980. Caption reads: "Drewry's Bluff, Richmond National Park, Richmond, Virginia. On May 15, 1862, a Union squadron, including the famous ironclad Monitor, steamed up the James River and attacked this Confederate guardian of the James seven miles south of Richmond. The failed attack prevented the Confederate capital from being shelled early in the war, and the presence of the fort acted as a deterrent to other Union naval forays up the James. The large seacoast gun (inset) is on display." Postcard number: RB 001.
