Summary: | General "Stonewall" Jackson's Statue, Capitol Square, Richmond, Virginia, circa 1907-1914. Caption reads: "General 'Stonewall' Jackson's Statue, (Capitol Square,) Richmond, Va. This masterpiece of the sculptor's art, by Foley, was unveiled October 26th, 1875; being presented to the State of Virginia by certain English gentlemen, as a tribute of their admiration for this military genius. Gen. Jackson was mortally wounded May 2, 1863, by his own soldiers, who mistook him and his staff for a detachment of the enemy. His command 'stood like a stone wall' at Bull Run: and such was the celerity of their movements that they became known as 'the foot cavalry.'" Postcard number: A-5439, 84. |
