Summary:Hoopers Strait Lighthouse, St. Michaels, Maryland, circa 1971-1983. Caption reads: "Pictured is Hoopers Strait Lighthouse, which is among the last of the many cottage type 'screwpile' lighthouses. These were once a common sight on the Chesapeake Bay. First lighted in 1879, it was manned by a crew of two men. It originally stood about one-half mile from shore at Hoopers Straight. The iron pilings were not driven but screwed into the bay bottom, thus its name 'screwpile lighthouse.' Now on exhibit at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum." Message reads: "Dear J. & J., We were sorry to hear that you would not be coming to Wash. this spring. Kathy Foster spent Memorial Day weekend in our guest room at Paupae - we liked her very much. She was an easy person to have visit us. Love Herb & Edie." Postmark date: June 9, 1983; Postcard number: 213-78; Message included.
