Sanderlin, Walter S. The Great National Project: A History of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1946.
Annotation / Notes: It has its longueurs and the author occasionally forsakes objectivity, but this is the single most comprehensive treatment of a very important early waterway. The C&O Canal was planned to connect the nation's capital with the west. Baltimore's railroad turned out to be the better idea at the time, but the canal had a good long run and finished strong--the C&O Canal National Historical Park is unique in America.
