French motion picture director François Truffaut is pictured sitting at the American Film Institute (AFI) in Washington, D.C. The AFI presented a retrospective on Truffaut's work in February 1979, including his own films as well as films that influenced him, and Truffaut was present for its opening. The photograph was taken by Don Hamerman and appeared in the March 1979 issue of Unicorn Times, an alternative performing arts periodical in Washington, D.C.
