Fort Manzana, near Mountainair, New Mexico, circa 1907-1914. Caption reads: "The old Fort of Manzana was built by the Spanish speaking people in 1816, the date of the first permanent settlement on the east side of the Manzana mountains. It was the first house built and was for protection from the Indians. The old apple tree from which the town and the mountain take their names were found growing in 1806, the date of the first attempt at settlement. In addition to the ruins near Mountainair, among them being the ruins of La Cuara, seven miles distant, and La Gran Quivira, about twenty-four miles, missions which were built in the 15th century by the Franciscan fathers. Mountainair lies at an altitude of 6547 feet." Postmark date: June 1, 1915; Postcard number: 10951; Message included.
