Summary:Map of Riversdale Demesnes, Rossburg Farm, Situated in Prince George's Co. Md. belonging to Charles Benedict. Calvert, Esq. The plat was hand-drawn by Baltimore Land Surveyor William Sides in 1853. Charles Benedict Calvert, who commissioned the map, later gave land depicted on the map to found the Maryland Agricultural College in 1856.The plantation holdings shown on the plat covered approximately three square miles and include what is now the University of Maryland, much of College Park, University Park, Hyattsville, Riverdale, Edmondston, and Bladensburg. The map was donated to the University of Maryland Libraries in 1996 by the Riversdale Historical Society who received the map from the great granddaughter of Charles Calvert, Mary Calvert Conger. This very large map (80 3/4 inches by 53 1/2 inches) was digitized in June 2017 with funding donated to the UMD Libraries Historical Manuscripts Unit Support Fund. The original map is on display in the Maryland Room, the University of Maryland Libraries Special Collections reading room. High resolution version available upon request.
