Summary: | Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) sent a telegram from Indianapolis, Indiana on August 30, 1916 to William L. Hutcheson, President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, in Washington, D.C. regarding the critical nature of supporting the eight hour workday. Gompers instructed Hutcheson to telegraph to both of their US Senators and congressmen and insist upon an eight hour workday at present compensation. On August 31,1916 (the next day), Hutcheson sent a telegram to Senators Thos. Taggart and John Kern asking that they put their strongest efforts "against the enactment of any law imposing upon the workers of America servitude for even one hour."
