Notes: Erie Locke's only connection to Maryland was his birth in Rising Sun in 1823. Lincoln's Secretary of Interior appointed him superintendent of agriculture in the Patent Office, but only four months later, Locke joined the Union Army. His successor, Isaac Newton, was the first commissioner of the new Department of Agriculture. After the war, Locke and others developed the citrus industry in Pasadena, CA.
