Strain, Paula M. The Blue Hills of Maryland: History Along the Appalachian Trail on South Mountain and the Catoctins. Vienna, VA: Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, 1993.
Notes: Strain states that the Maryland portion of the Appalachian Trail has more history than any other part of the path. She presents this history as one would encounter it along the trail, heading north from Harpers Ferry to Pennsylvania. A great deal of this history relates to the Civil War. She also tells the history of the Trail itself.

Sutton, Stanley B. Beyond the Roadgate: Kent County, 1900-1980. Privately published, 1983.
Notes: This history of twentieth century Kent was compiled by a former Agricultural Extension Officer. Naturally enough, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the agricultural and rural heritage of the County. Pivotal 1980 leaders of the county supply commentary on their areas of expertise.

Truitt, Charles J. Historic Salisbury Updated 1662-1982. Salisbury, MD: Historical Books, Inc., 1982.
Notes: As the author states, this is an "encyclopedic history", almost every conceivable subject is addressed including health care facilities, agribusiness, sports, the Delmarva separatist movements, the slave trade, fires, and so on. It is especially useful in the documentation it presents of the varied twentieth century society.

Notes: These are the first "pictures" of this region, accurately depicting marine, terrestrial and avian species, and both Native Americans and sundry of their crafts. They are widely applicable to the nearby Chesapeake Indians and some drawings may directly depict Bay life because John White explored there during his stay.
