Notes: Transcriptions of a series of 41 letters written by Lafayette to Victoria McGinley Buckler, his wife, as they traveled between their home in St. Mary's and Baltimore. Two letters are also included written by Victoria. The letters deal with the details of daily life and the relationship of this couple. A sizeable introduction proceeds the letters and places the letters in the context of place, time, and family.

Nast, Leonara Heilig, Laurence N. Krause, and R. C. Monk, eds. Baltimore. A Living Renaissance. Baltimore: Historic Baltimore Society, Inc., 1982.
Notes: An eclectic mix of over eighty essays, authored by a broad spectrum of individuals, on topics that illustrate the renaissance that Baltimore experienced during the 1960s and 1970s. Organized under such broad topics as "Baltimore Builds","Social Perspective","The Arts", and "What Makes Baltimore Baltimore" the broad range of subjects covered include Baltimore night life, public housing, television and radio, football, aging services, and influential political and community figures. Includes a brief chronology of the City's redevelopment, 1937-1981.

Nurnberger, Ralph D. "The Great Baltimore Deluge of 1817." Maryland Historical Magazine 69 (Winter 1974): 405-8.

Olesker, Michael. Michael Olesker's Baltimore. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1995.
Notes: Selection of columns from the News American and Baltimore Sun, covering the years 1979-1994. His topics include politicians, sports, eccentrics. He presents a loving picture of Baltimore during the last quarter of the twentieth century without overlooking the problems, such as crime, drugs, and poverty, which plague the city.

Olson, Sherry H. Baltimore: The Building of an American City. Revised edition. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1997.
Notes: The product of a geographer, this excellent history of Baltimore focuses on its physical growth as an urban center. Special emphasis is placed on how the city, and its inhabitants, handled the changes brought about by city growth.

Orser, Ed. Blockbusting in Baltimore: The Edmondson Village Story. Lexington, KY: University Press of Kentucky, 1994.
Notes: In a ten year period, 1955-1965, the western community of Edmondson Village completely changed its population. As socially mobile blacks moved in, whites, feeling threatened and displaced, abandoned the community. Edmondson is the story of a phenomena that is quite common in many urban areas. The article includes some discussion of rowhouse development.

Orser, W. Edward. "The Marking of a Baltimore Rowhouse Community: The Edmondson Avenue Area, 1915-1945." Maryland Historical Magazine 80 (Fall 1985): 203-227.
Notes: Edmondson Village developed as a late street car, early automobile, suburban community. It was originally a white middle income neighborhood. Its highly differentiated character made it very fragile and it was very open to change.

Page, Clint. "Stone Hill." Baltimore 68 (February 1975): 16-19.

Peerless, David J. Baltimore Citygames. Baltimore: Maclay and Associates, 1983.

Power, Garrett. Parceling Out Land in Baltimore, 1632-1796. Baltimore: Maryland Historical Society, 1994.
Notes: Reprints of two Maryland Historical Magazine articles with the same title. Using a variety of sources, both primary and secondary, Power traces the chain of title, up to the point of incorporation, of the 2000 acres of Baltimore Town, Jones Town, and Fell's Point, the communities that became Baltimore City.

Power, Garrett. "Entail in Two Cities: A Comparative Study of Long Term Leases in Birmingham, England and Baltimore, Maryland, 1700-1900." Journal of Architectural and Planning Research 9 (Winter 1994): 315-24.

Power, Garrett. "High Society: The Building Height Limitation on Baltimore's Mt. Vernon Place." Maryland Historical Magazine 79 (Fall 1984): 197-219.
Notes: In 1904 Maryland's first zoning law was passed. It disallowed the construction of any non-church building over 70 feet in height within one block of Baltimore's Washington Monument. This act, which was actually a move of selfish interest of the part of developers who were then marketing the Mount Vernon area to Baltimore's aristocracy, ended up being a major reason why twentieth centuries developers were thwarted and the area preserved in its nineteenth century landscape.
