Title |
Descriptive programme of the grand concerts by the premier military band of the United States of America (22nd Regiment of New York) conducted by Mr. P.S. Gilmore with vocalist Miss Lillian Norton, circa 1878
|
Description |
In 1878, Gilmore took his band on a European tour. In moving to the United States, the cornetist Matthew Arbuckle had deserted the British army, and so he was unable to accompany the Gilmore Band. We can see in this program that he is replaced by Walter Emerson. Bands of the nineteenth century often toured with female vocal soloists. We find in this program Lillian Norton (1857 - 1914), an American soprano, who would soon become the Wagnerian singer Lillian Nordica.
