Title |
Safe House: Still Looking, Friends Meeting House, Wilmington, Delaware
|
Description |
Commissioned by the University of Delaware, "Safe House: Still Looking" used the history of the Underground Railroad (significant to the community of Wilmington) as the point of departure for an exploration of questions of safety and sanctuary from contemporary and historic perspectives. The commission produced both a 40-minute concert dance work with an original score by Ysaye Barnwell that toured in repertory and this site-specific performance at the historic Friends Meeting House, culmination of a six-week residency in Wilmington. Portions of the concert work are interspersed with performances by community members and local professionals, and the audience takes part in singing and dancing as the performance moves outdoors for its final section. Storyteller Jon Spelman (Lerman's husband) also appears. Participating organizations include the Christina Cultural Arts Center and Latin American Community Center. 00:00:00 - Part 1; 00:47:38 - Part 2, beginning with remarks from Liz Lerman and teaching of the final dance and song to the audience; 01:41:00 - Performers and audience move outdoors for finale; 01:49:45 - interviews with audience, participants, and Dance Exchange artists. [Query pending with Lerman to check accuracy of the foregoing.]
