Joseph Weber with lab equipment in July 1989. Joseph Weber (1919-2000) was a University of Maryland physicist credited with conducting early research into the fields of laser theory and gravitational wave detection. Dr. Weber's wave detection experiments began in 1958 and while he reported positive results, these could not be duplicated. Weber's work would inspire other scientists in these fields, and he is considered one of the pioneers in these areas due to his creative thinking.
