Patrick Gilmore died suddenly on September 24, 1892 in St. Louis. Just two days after his death, John Philip Sousa and his band gave their first concert in Plainfield, New Jersey. Their first piece was Gilmore's own The Voice of a Departed Soul. Item 20 in the collection is identical but not mounted, accompanying envelope with the following handwritten, "Last program of P.S. Gilmore at Exposition Music Hall, St. Louis, Missouri, Septembers 23rd, 1892." Gilmore's Band of 100 Pieces . . . . Born in Ireland, Christmas Day, 1829; died in St. Louis, Missouri, September 24, 1892. Printed on silk, mounted.
