|
Description |
This is a letter written by Tyrus Cobb to Byrd on October 31, 1951. The letter reads: "Dear Dr. Byrd:- I have been away on a hunting trip in Idaho for two weeks hence the apparent delay in returning the enclosed. Had my mail forwarded here to my summer address and only received some last night. My permanent address, Menlo Park, Calif. With kindest, I am, Sincerely, Ty Cobb." Ty Cobb was a professional baseball player for the Detroit Tigers and played center field. He played professionally in the big league for 24 years and set many records. Byrd reached out to Cobb in an effort to include him on a panel for the federal government's Salary Stabilization Board. It was a concern to the public that professional athletes' salaries may negatively affect the working public during the Korean War era. The three men on the panel included Dr. HC Byrd, Ty Cobb, and John Kieran. The team worked together to compile opinions from professional athletes and the public. The panel published a final report which is housed in the Byrd series of the President's Office Records. President Eisenhower terminated the Salary Stabilization Board in 1953.
