|
Description |
While Patrick S. Gilmore (1829-1892) was born in Ireland, he spent most of his career in the United States, where he was attached to several bands. In 1858 he established his own ensemble, Gilmore's Band, which served during the Civil War as the band for the 24th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. In 1873, Gilmore left Boston to accept a position as director of the 22nd Regiment of New York Band, which served as one of the most famous American professional bands until Gilmore's death. We see Gilmore in his 22nd Regiment uniform in this photograph.
