Soldiers Monument in the National Cemetery, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, circa 1907-1914. Caption reads: The National Monument forms the center of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, about which rest the dead from that fateful struggle of July 1,2,3, 1863. Radiating from the National Monument, in a half-circle, are the State sections, one for each of the eighteen Northern States, three sections for unknown dead and one for the United States Regular Army. Each soldier rests with his feet toward this monument, which towers high above and proclaims them heroes. 3,590 soldiers from the field lie buried here, of whom 979 are unknown. Postcard number: 162.
