Solomon Gompers is standing up posing for this portrait. Solomon Gompers is the father to Samuel Gompers, the longest serving president of the AFL and a leading figure in the labor movement. Solomon was from Amsterdam and later moved to London, England before Samuel was born. Solomon made a living in the cigar industry. He moved his family to New York, New York in 1863. He and Samuel both continued to work in the cigar making industry until Samuel began getting involved in leadership position in local labor unions.
