Title |
Charge of Discrimination form filed by Johnie C. Brown against the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union International, Port Arthur, Texas, May 16, 1967
|
Description |
There are two images in this entry. The first is a letter from J.C. Touchet, the Equal Employment Officer at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Regional Office, on May 22, 1967 notifying Mr. Don Slaiman, the Director of the Civil Rights Department of AFL-CIO of the discrimination charge. The second image is the actual discrimination charge that was included with the letter sent by Touchet to Slaiman. The charge was filed on May 16, 1967 and the discriminatory event occurred on April 26, 1967. The summary reads: "The Union has refused to pursue my grievances for higher pay for work in a higher classification, saying the company (Tefaco) could claim this was prior practice. I believe the Union does not want to pursue my grievances because they may then have to accept the company offer of June 1966 to upgrade labor (all regular whites were taken out of labor in June 1966 and put into Crafts and all crafts were up-graded in wage rate). Union rejected offer for labor upgrade saying that labor was needed; it would also have meant change in classification. Union oppose reclassification for labor (and wage increase) because this will probably result in labor doing simpler classified jobs and classified employees would no longer have laborers at their command to do their work for them. Since all regular laborers are negroes, this constitutes discrimination because of race. Current new hires (negroes and whites) must pass promotional qualifications before being hired and they stay in labor only a matter of 2 or 3 weeks before progressing forward."
