Caption reads: "Bloody Angle, Spotsylvania Battlefield, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, Fredericksburg, Va. Here, May 12, 1864, in an area ever after known as Bloody Angle, was fought the most savage, long-sustained, hand-to-hand engagement of the Civil War. The fighting continued with unabating fury from 6 a.m. till 3 a.m., next day, when the exhausted Confederates withdrew. Visitor center is in Fredericksburg. National Park Service."
