Joe Anderer operates a "Transfer Press", undated
|
Description |
Siderographer, Joe Anderer, member of the Washington Local, operates a "Transfer Press" to make a 1/2 inch intaglio printing plate for a seal/label at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, Washington, DC, date unknown. Transfer Press is an American Bank note large design, which adds an additional image of an engraving from a steel roll mounted to a mandrel. The mandrel is held between two "points" or the "nocker" guide. When the "roll" is in the correct position, hands and foot pedals are used the apply pressure. Then using the large wheel on the far side of the press, the roll is moved back and fourth until the engraved subject is reproduced. The 1/4 inch steel plate is soft and highly polished, weighing up to 60 pounds. For complete collection information, visit the full finding aid at http://hdl.handle.net/1903.1/1705
