The Arcade at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, circa 1901-1907. Caption reads: "The Arcade - University of Virginia, Charlottesville." Reverse caption reads: "The Arcade of the University of Virginia extends in front of the buildings facing the lawn on the east and west. Thomas Jefferson, the founder of the University, planned this Arcade as follows: 'The covered way in front of the whole range of buildings is to be Tuscan, with columns of brick rough cast, their diameter sixteen inches, but in front of the pavilion to be arches, in order to support the columns of the portico above more solidly."
