Artist's depiction of the Battle of the Crater, Petersburg, Virginia, circa 1961-1980. Caption reads: "The Battle of the Crater, July 30, 1864. This painting of the famous Civil War battle by John Elder (1833-95) depicts the charge of Matrone's Virginia brigade after the Confederate defense line had been broken by the Union mine. Several hours later, Lee's troops recaptured their line. The Crater is in Petersburg National Military Park, Virginia." Message reads: "Dear Mom and family, Guess you thought we were gone. We've been so busy seeing sights like the one on the card. Sorry we didn't write sooner. We're having a lot of fun. See you in about a week. Love, Judy and Bob." Postmark date illegible.
