Caption reads: "Top view: Fort Sumter, South Carolina - On the 12th of April, 1861, Confederate troops fired the opening shots of the war between the states, upon Fort Sumter. Major Beauregard was in command of the secessionist forces in Charleston. Bottom view: The McLean House, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Virginia - On Apr. 9 1865 Robt. E. Lee met U.S. Grant in this residence and surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to end the four year war between the states." Postcard number: 42966-B.
