Portrait of Sara Gompers, undated. Sarah Moses Gompers was born on July 3, 1827 in Amsterdam and died on September 3, 1898 in New York, New York USA. She married Solomon Gompers and had twelve children with him. Sarah and Solomon are the parents of Samuel Gompers, the longest serving president of the AFL and a leading figure in the labor movement. Solomon, her husband, made a living in the cigar industry and moved the family to New York, New York in 1863.
