Caption reads: "Virginia saw the first major land battle of the Civil War at First Manassas, July 21, 1861, and four long, tragic years later, Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox, April 9, 1865. Of the war's thousand battles, skirmishes, and engagements, sixty percent was fought in Virginia. During the Battle of Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863, forty Confederate cannon successfully defended the high, open plain known as Hazel Grove (pictured here).
