Image of Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., where President Abraham Lincoln was shot, circa 1907-1914. Caption reads: "Ford's Theatre, Washington, D.C. On April 14th, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln and his wife visited the theatre, occupying a private box. A man named John Wilkes booth crept stealthily behind and shot him through the head, leaped on the stage swinging a dagger, exclaiming to the audience, "The South is avenged!" He fled through a back door, but was mortally wounded by those pursuing him. The President expired the next morning, April 15, 1865." Postcard number: 653-25.
